About Patepang
On Patepang, connections start with meeting.
Patepang is an app for staying close to the people you have actually met. This page is about why it exists, what it holds to, and who builds it.
Why Patepang exists
Today, to reach you, someone never has to have met you.
It is enough that they know your number. Or your username. Data that can leak, be bought, be guessed. Once that data is in their hands, they can get into your pocket, your bedroom, your 2 a.m. — without ever once standing in front of you.
That is why your inbox looks the way it does: a wedding invitation that turns out to be an .apk file, a “Mama” asking for phone credit, a loan app that pays out in five minutes, a stranger angry that you did not reply. Scammers and the most important people in your life come in through exactly the same door — because the door only checks one thing: data.
And on the other side, look at the people who have actually met you. A long talk at a coffee stall. Someone new you met on a trip. Someone who made you think, this person has to stay in my life. A meeting that good almost always dies on the spot — or can only be saved by a broken ritual: handing over your number, the same key that guards your bank account and every other account, to someone you met ten minutes ago.
Giving it feels careless. Not giving it feels like turning down their friendship.
This is no accident. The platforms we have are designed this way — they live off strangers: off the ads that chase you, the algorithms that feed you, the feed that never ends. A door open to everyone is their business model. So the problem is not a missing feature. The problem is that the rule for getting in is upside down.
Today, connections start with data.
Patepang starts from the opposite: connections start with meeting — or not at all.
Five problems, one root
There are five, and all of them grow from one rule turned upside down: today, connections start with data, not with meeting.
-
Today
Strangers can reach you anytime.
Spam, scams and harassment get in because to reach you, people only need your number or your name — not to have ever met you. The wedding invitation .apk and “Mama, send me phone credit” are symptoms of that door.
On Patepang
No one can look you up.
There is no search, and no number to find you by. A connection starts only by meeting.
-
Today
Staying in touch means handing over your number.
A good new acquaintance can only continue if you hand over your number — the same key to your bank account and every account you have — to someone you met ten minutes ago. Giving it is careless; not giving it kills the friendship.
On Patepang
A tempel is enough.
Scan the code, shake both phones together for two seconds, and you are connected. Your account has no phone number and no email.
-
Today
You are connected to people you have never met.
Hundreds of “friends” and followers, almost none of whom have ever stood in front of you — while the people you actually talked with vanish as soon as the meeting ends. The graph is data, not real life.
On Patepang
Every connection, someone you have met.
Each one starts with a meeting, and fades after a year apart unless you meet again.
-
Today
Your attention is what is for sale.
Ads, algorithms and endless feeds are designed so you do not stop — because what the platform sells is your time. Relationships are turned into bait for ads.
On Patepang
No ads. No analytics.
Patepang is paid for by subscriptions and tips, not by your attention.
-
Today
Your life is readable by the platform.
Messages, friend lists and the pattern of your relationships are kept on servers that can read them. Companies know who talks to whom, when and how often — even when message content is locked, your map of relationships is not.
On Patepang
Sealed before it leaves.
What you share is locked on your phone. Patepang’s server sees a sealed envelope: no contents, no sender. It does know who has done a tempel with whom, and when; the privacy policy lists everything it keeps.
Patepang solves all five at the root: no meeting, no connection.
And its server is built so it cannot read what you share, and knows as little as possible. What the server knows
What we hold to
- Meeting first.
- A connection is only born from a tempel, when two people stand face to face. Patepang serves relationships born from meeting; it does not replace them.
- Your content is locked on your phone.
- Messages, updates, moments and photos are encrypted on the phone before they are sent, so the server cannot read them.
- No bot accounts.
- An account is only born through a tempel when people meet in person, without an email or a phone number, and one phone can only create a few accounts a month.
- No ads and no algorithmic feed.
- Updates are in time order and the page comes to an end. Patepang’s income comes only from subscriptions and tips, and every feature is free.
- Staying because it is comfortable, not because you are lured.
- There are no unread counts, follower counts or rankings that lure people back.
- Honest about how things are.
- What is finished is kept apart from what is not, and what the server knows is stated plainly.
